Why is Alpaca fiber valuable?

Alpaca fiber is classified as a rare specialty fiber. It is five times warmer than sheep wool fiber and more luxurious than cashmere. There are more than 22 natural colors of alpaca fleece. An infinite array of natural colors can be produced by blending these fibers. Alpaca fiber can also be easily worked. Alpaca fiber is strong and resilient and has more thermal capacity than almost any other animal fiber. The fiber actually contains microscopic air pockets that contribute to the creation of lightweight apparel with very high insulation value. Alpaca fiber does not itch as wool often does because it does not contain lanolin and has a smooth cell structure.

In physical structure, alpaca fiber is somewhat akin to hair, being very glossy, but its softness and fineness enable the spinner to produce satisfactory yarn with comparative ease. Good quality alpaca fiber is approximately 18-25 in diameter. Finer fleeces, ones with a smaller diameter, are preferred, and thus are more expensive.

Alpaca huacaya

Huacaya or Huacayo is the predominant Alpaca type. Its fine and bulky fleece offers the widest range of natural shades and has a natural crimp or wavy quality. They have a harmonious shape giving the appearance of strength and gracefulness.

Alpaca Suri

Wonderful Alpaca suri top quality alpaca suri finest warment designs in alpaca suri. Suri alpacas is the softest alpaca fiber.

The primary characteristic which distinguishes a suri from a huacaya is the phenotype of its fleece. The suri's fleece falls close to the body, moves freely, and gives the animal a lustrous, flat-sided appearance. The luster found in the suri's fleece is the primary indication of the animal's quality. In addition, the fiber should be fine, and have good handle (a more slippery handle than huacaya) with a well-nourished, almost greasy feel. The locks or ringlets that make up the fleece should be round, form close to the skin, and have uniform twist to the end. Ideally, the style of lock should be uniform from the top knot to the hock; particular attention should be paid to uniformity and independence of lock across the mid side. The legs and underbelly should be well covered.

A more rounded or fluffy appearance can indicate volume rather than density in a suri's fleece which is undesirable. There should be no crimp in the staple, but a low wave is desirable along the length of an individual fiber. Due to the compactness of the fleece, suris often give the appearance of being smaller than the huacaya, but this is an optical illusion.

There are three main categories to classify the finess of alpaca wool.

Royal baby alpaca wool

The only natural colours available in Royal baby alpaca wool quality is white. This is due to the demand of highstreet fashion industry, demanding white fibres which are easier to dye and coloured on demand. This is practial, but not very environmental friendly, most dyes are harsh and damaging for the environment.
